EFT Tapping for Children

In my professional opinion, I believe that Tapping is a tool that every child needs and deserves to be taught how to do. From birth to 7 years of age, children receive their ‘programming’ from parents, other people in their lives and the environment around them.  This programming will affect behaviours, beliefs and thought processes throughout life.

The stress and emotions all our children experience today are immense, especially after the additional stresses and unprecedented disruptions and stresses of recent years. Even with amazing, loving parents, many children, especially younger children, do not know how to share or release anxieties, fears or worries.

As parents, we are constantly looking for ways to help our children to feel calm, safe and confident, to self-soothe and self-regulate.

It is hard as a parent to see our child suffering or unhappy. It often brings up emotions and stresses in us which our children pick up on, as our energy is contagious.

This is why I always tell parents (& myself!), that the best way to help our children, is to put our own oxygen mask on first (as well as giving them resources they can use anytime, whether you are there or not).

Creating a circle of care for your child and you!

When I work with a child and give them these resources, I strongly recommend that a parent also experiences the EFT tools and how to use them to achieve optimal outcomes for their child and themselves for 3 reasons;

1) You learn lifetime tools that you can use anytime to help you to deal with stresses and emotions, allowing you to understand what your child is experiencing and also helping you to be in the best mental and emotional state to help your children.

2) You can model using the tools in front of your children. The power of seeing a parent use the same tools is significant - it says “it’s ok not to be ok”, I’m not alone”, “I’m using the same tool as an adult, we are equal”.

3) All of the above increases trust, as well as connection, communication and compassion in the relationship and family home. Building these strong bridges, between you and your children are so valuable, especially as they reach teenage years and they start to move into the world of independence.

Tapping is a wonderful tool for children

Whatever a child’s age, Tapping allows children to be reassured that their emotions and thoughts are important. Children are able to discover that they have the in-built ability to self-soothe and self-regulate, to positively change how they feel physically and emotionally in a safe, easy and effective way, anytime of the day or night.

Tapping empowers children with emotional intelligence tools. The learning is a gift that allows children to optimally enjoy the innocence and joys of their precious childhood and the rest of their life.

What you and your child can expect in a Tapping session

I use age appropriate, fun and creative ways, to show your child how emotion affects our body and behaviour, and how your child has powers to turn upset feelings such as anger, worry, sadness, low self-esteem into calm, confidence and happiness, which is what being a child is all about.

The tailored sessions are interactive and I have access to a variety of effective tools to really connect with your children at their level, including:-

  1. Using their own favourite toys or characters to talk about their different emotions

  2. Using creative toys and visual aids to help them to connect with and measure their feelings or thoughts

  3. Picture tapping, which combines drawing and tapping, and means they don’t have to talk about how they feel if they can’t or don’t want to

  4. Demonstrating effective, tapping related superpower skills (via Stanley the Superpower owl and his friends if age appropriate) that your child can use any time to self soothe and help them to feel better

  5. During sessions - as the parent, you are always present during the very first part of the session when I first meet the child to make sure they are happy and feel safe.

  6. As long as the child is comfortable, you wait outside the studio while we do the actual tapping session.  The door remains open and your child knows they can call you in at any time. This approach allows us to build up trust and the child often feels freer to say things they may not say if you, the parent, was present.

  7. At the end of the session, I encourage the child to explain what they learnt and tools they are looking forward to using (which they often love to do!)

Lou treated both me and my daughter for my daughter sleep issues and night time fears. She was so friendly and caring and took time to get to know us and work out what was at the root of the problem. She taught her tapping to manage her anxiety at home and gave me some tools to help her at home. We are still using these tools and they have made a significant difference and my daughter can now get to sleep and stay asleep more consistently which has made her feel much happier, thank you Lou
